On the hottest day of the year so far, giving perfect conditions for all athletes (with the possible exception of the distance runners), the third round of Southern Mens League matches held at Horsham last Saturday ended very disappointingly for Epsom & Ewell Harriers. By complete contrast to their previous match which ended in victory and saw the club climb to 4th place in the league, this time they finished at the opposite end of the results table and consequently dropped to 10th position in the league.
To be brutally honest, achieving anything better than this would have been remarkable with a team of just 9 athletes managing to cover only 18 of 36 events. However, there were some excellent perfomances from all those who were able to compete. Brian Harlick started proceedings off in the Pole Vault with a season's best of 2.60m. On the track, Stephen Parker narrowly finished 2nd in the 400mH and 400m in 61.0s and 53.5s respectively. In the short sprint, Stefan Richards and Dan Searle finished 1st (11.2s) and 2nd (11.6s), before Matt Donnery and James Ogilvie claimed maximum points for the team in the 5000m in times of 16:10.9 and 18:13.2. Back in the field events, Ian Frankish was never out the top 2 in the throws (HT: 28.46, SP: 12.58, JT: 37.06 & DT: 33.33), but had to yield to clubmate Nathan Featherstone in the Hammer with an excellent throw of 35.51m. Next match is at Bromley's Norman Park on 10 July where a stronger team will be hoping for a much better result.
