Harriers wilt in heat

On the hottest day of the year so far, giving perfect conditions for all athletes (with the possible exception of the distance runners), the third round of Southern Mens League matches held at Horsham last Saturday ended very disappointingly for Epsom & Ewell Harriers.  By complete contrast to their previous match which ended in victory and saw the club climb to 4th place in the league, this time they finished at the opposite end of the results table and consequently dropped to 10th position in the league.

Harriers in Close Finish 1 May 2010

In the first Southern Mens League match of the new athletics season, Epsom & Ewell Harriers' athletes put up a fine display despite a much depleted squad due to injuries, London Marathon recoveries and a few less acceptable excuses. The afternoon began in the best way possible on both track and field, with 1st places in the Shot Putt from Ian Frankish (12.44) and Stephen Parker (9.73) and in 400mH from Stephen Parker again (61.2) and Martin Lay (62.5).  Thereafter, Crawley AC regularly filled 1st place leaving the Harriers battling with Lewes & Haywards Heath for the minor placings.  For the large part, the Harriers prevailed and held second place in the match for a long period of time.  This was made possible by the arrival of two new U20 athletes, Jack Stevenson and James Bixley, gaining valuable points in 800m, 1500m and both relays.  However, as the afternoon progressed and with only 10 athletes trying to cover 36 events, Lewes & HH overhauled the Harriers' points total to claim 2nd spot behind Crawley.  It was a terrific effort as the team tried to cover as many events as they could - Ian Frankish (7), Martin Lay (5) and Stephen Parker (5) in particular.  The turning points came in 110mH and 3000 S/c where Lewes filled 3 places to the Harriers none.  Despite finishing third, the Harriers' accumulated a healthy match points total which could prove crucial later in the season.  The next match is our 'home' match at Kingsmeadow on 15th May when the Harriers' opponents will be Invicta, Cambridge H and London AC

Season Starts in Sunshine for Harriers
The start of the athletics season could not have had more perfect weather conditions at Kingsmeadow last weekend, where the traditional Kinnaird & Sward match was held in gloriously warm sunshine and very little wind.  Eight athletes from Epsom & Ewell sallied forth to put down an early season marker and set some very promising indicators:
Stefan Richards (U20) - 400m : 49.77 secs (0.01 sec outside his PB)
Mark Butler (V40) - 400m : 57.75 secs (better than 2009 best)
Lee Pollock (V40) - 2000m S/C : 7:51.2
Bill Arbury (V40) - 3000m : 10:49.12
Martin Lay (U20) - 400mH : 68.1 secs
- Javelin : 32.13 m
Ian Frankish - Discus : 27.69 m
- Shot : 12.06 m
Brian Harlick (V60) - Pole Vault : 2.50 m
David Whittaker (V65) - 100m : 15.33 secs
- 200m : 31.05 secs
Many more athletes will be required on 1st May when the serious competion begins with the Southern Mens League, again at Kingsmeadow.  After gaining promotion last season, the Harriers will be looking to consolidate in Div 3 or even go up again if they can field athletes in all 36 events.  Anyone wishing to take part can contact the Harriers at their Ewell Court headquarters on Tuesday or Thursday evenings
